The effect of aqueous extracts from plants of Lotus corniculatus and cereal grasses on seed germination

Abstract

The paper presents the results of the laboratory studies on allelopathic effect of aqueous extracts of the vegetative and root mass of Lotus corniculatus and short cereal grasses on seed germination and root length of the plant seedlings. Biotest method defined species that are allelopathically active and tolerant (resistant) to the effects of colins. Germination of the acceptor plant’s seeds in water extracts of the donor plant proves a significant adverse effect of physiologically active substances contained in plant bodies on seed germination. It is found that the seed of cereal grasses germinated in water extracts of Lotus corniculatus lose their germinating power compared to the control on average by 11— 12 %, and the seed of Lotus corniculatus germinated in the extracts of bodies of plants of cereal grasses - by 5— 11 %. The phenomenon of synergies (growth stimulating) of the germinal roots of Lotus corniculatus under the influence of physiologically active compounds from the extracts of vegetative and root mass of cereal grass species has been revealed. The length of germ roots of Lotus corniculatus germinated in the extracts of cereal grasses increases from 12.8 mm to 14.0— 14.6 mm or 9— 14 %.
